Public policy advocacy lies at the heart of Balancing the Scales.
Our efforts have included a successful multi-year campaign restoring voting rights to thousands of Nebraskans who completed the terms of their sentence.
Most recently, we advocated to end Nebraska’s lifetime ban on food assistance (also known as SNAP or food stamps) for Nebraskans with felony drug convictions. Nebraska is one of only 11 states with a lifetime ban on food assistance. While legislation to end the ban passed on a 32-17 vote, Governor Pillen vetoed the bill and the Legislature was unable to override the Governor’s veto. Balancing the Scales remains committed to this issue moving forward.
