The Balancing the Scales of Justice Task Force, created by Bishop J. Scott Barker in the Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska, focuses on developing faithful witness to reform in our legal system. We believe that our legal system in the United States is broken, and the death penalty is the most visible example of its brokenness. As followers of Jesus, we are compelled to intervene in the world, calling for justice, healing, and reconciliation.
The Balancing the Scales of Justice Task Force was created in response to a Resolution of the General Convention that “…[bishops] appoint task forces of clergy and lay persons…to develop a plan to repeal the Death Penalty, to be witnesses in the name of Jesus Christ, and to…report on [these] actions to the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church.”
