Who we are

Balancing the Scales is a ministry of the Diocese of Nebraska focused on developing faithful witnesses to criminal justice reform through prayer, formation opportunities, and workshops.

Mother Kaity Reece is the chair of Balancing the Scales. This ministry was established by Bishop Barker in 2019.

Balancing the Scales recognizes that the criminal justice system is broken and that our baptismal promises to love our neighbor as ourselves, to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being requires us to seek reform.

Our efforts have included a successful multi-year campaign restoring voting rights to thousands of Nebraskans who completed the terms of their sentence. We now turn our attention to ending the lifetime ban on food assistance (SNAP benefits) for Nebraskans with certain drug offenses. Nebraska is one of only 11 states with a lifetime ban on food assistance.

LB 319 (Rountree) ensures that all Nebraskans receive the food assistance they need upon re-entry into our communities.
